  • Prerequisites: Knowledge of the basic notions about the General Botany is required.
  • Objectives: LEARNING OUTCOMES: The course aims to provide students with fundamental notions about the plant ecology and with adequate means for carrying out a scientific research on applied botany. In detail: knowledge of the evolutionary and adaptative devices of Higher Plants; acquisition of the concept of medicinal plant and plant extract; identification of the main classes of secondary metabolites; learning of importance and and potentiality of plant-based diet in human culture; acquisition of principles of plant genetics on modern and ancient samples; knowledge in techniques of sampling, analysis and conservation of plant germplasm; acquisition of notions about forensic botany and forest and agronomic sciences; archaeobotany. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The course aims to provide students with the ability to discuss and argue a botanical topic from a specialist point of view, based on the knowledge acquired during the lessons. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Identification of botanical species based on morphology and genetic analysis; detection, in nature, of the main plant evolutionary stratagems (reproductive and otherwise); association of the biological effect of plant extracts with ethnobotanical uses. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: Students should show the ability to correctly apply the principles of reasoning on problems/situations/case studies of plant ecological/genetic. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Students are required to use a specific scientific language in the description of the laboratory techniques, the molecular components and the plant districts analyzed and studied in the course. LEARNING SKILLS: Students are required to extrapolate the key concepts from the most recent scientific publications on the topics covered by the course and the ability to formulate and ask questions that require a thorough knowledge of the subjects.
