  • Prerequisites: basic knowledge of Greek and Latin.
  • Objectives: he course provides students with the necessary tools to orient themselves in the critical analysis of the texts of the classical Greek and Latin tradition, in view of a reconstruction of the original form of the texts starting from the material supports on which they are handed down, from the characteristics of the writing, from the authorial peculiarities, by means of the application of the method of textual criticism. Students will also acquire a detailed knowledge of the history of tradition and of classical textual criticism. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Students will get in-depth knowledge of the history of tradition and of textual criticism, of the history of philology and classical studies, of the ecdotic method, from the origins to today, including basics of digital philology. They will be able to orient themselves in the world of manuscript tradition, to interpret and build a critical apparatus, to apply to texts the knowledge acquired both historically and methodologically. They will be able to judge autonomously, and to transfer to others the knowledge acquired.
