  • Prerequisites: General knowledge of the history of Italian literature, with particular reference to the poetry of the thirteenth century. Knowledge of the main linguistic, metric and rhetorical structures characterizing the literary text. Ability to read and interpret a literary text, also in its historical and cultural context.
  • Objectives: LEARNING OUTCOMES: The course aims to introduce students to Italian philology, providing them with the knowledge and the methods of textual criticism. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Knowledge of the fundamental principles and problems of textual criticism, with particular reference to the Lachmann method and other methods useful for textual reconstruction. In-depth knowledge of the philological, formal and substantial aspects of Guido Cavalcanti's poetry. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Ability to use critical editions, scientific commentaries, dictionaries and other linguistic tools, metric and rhetorical repertoires, textual databases. Ability to recognize and deal with the philological and interpretative problems of a literary text. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: The student will be able to evaluate hypotheses and interpretative problems; to connect linguistic, philological and literary data for the purpose of formulating his own judgments, even on the basis of limited information; to integrate knowledge and manage complexity in order to make judgments on problems of different areas. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The student will be able to illustrate linguistic, philological and literary knowledge in a synthetic and analytical way; to provide examples to clarify and confirm theories; to use appropriately the technical language of the discipline. LEARNING SKILLS: The student will be able to read and understand manuals, essays and scientific articles related to the discipline; to use the research tools (dictionaries, bibliographical repertoires, textual databases) in order to expand their knowledge; to select and correlate different topics.
