  • Prerequisites: The course has no prerequisites. A basic knowledge of English and theatre history is recommended.
  • Objectives: LEARNING OUTCOMES: The course aims to introduce students to performance studies and its key concepts, providing them with tools for the analysis of a broad spectrum of social, cultural and artistic phenomena, ranging from performing arts, to rituals and ceremonies, and from public and political behaviour to social media representations. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Students will acquire historical-theoretical knowledge and methodological skills which will enable them to understand and analyse the relational and communicative dynamics that characterise cultural and artistic performances and their historical and contextual framework. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: At the end of the course the students will know some of the key concepts of performance studies and will be able to apply them independently and correctly to different fields of cultural and artistic production, in particular to contemporary theatre and performance art practices. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: The tools and skills provided during the course will enable the students to develop the ability to critically analyse the meanings and processes of construction that characterise artistic and cultural performances in the contemporary public sphere. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The students will be expected to use the key concepts of performance studies correctly and to apply them with terminological proficiency and a clear exposition to different artistic, cultural and social phenomena. LEARNING SKILLS: Through lectures and practical exercises students will acquire the ability to study contemporary cultural and artistic production through the lens of performance and will be able to apply the concepts of this field of study autonomously and consciously.
