  • Objectives: * The course will provide students with basic knowledge of the history of photography. Starting from some historical-critical turning points of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the developments of techniques and visual languages gradually elaborated by photographic culture will be considered in parallel. * The course has two purposes: to develop the skills to recognize and contextualize main types of photographic objects found today in archives, collections, and museums; to learn how to decode the basic elements of photographic representation, to understand the visual ideas elaborated by individual authors (in individual images, series, or publications) and to investigate interdisciplinary relationships with other media (painting, literature, cinema, architecture) that have characterized the development of modern photographic practices. * The course will help students reach an autonomous critical understanding of the medium and develop communication skills using the specifics of the discipline.
